One person, over time, can turn a life around

Grateful Dog

Feeling like saying thanks…to my Circle of Friends if there is room for such a letter…

Theo Birthday Party - Grateful DogOn June 16, at their downtown office, the Circle of Friends threw a party to honor my grateful dog, For two years, my 11 year old Vizsla, Theo, has been an active volunteer (with me) for the Circle of Friends, a wonderful local group of adults who mentor elementary school children. They provide fun, learning and just plain friendship every week year in and year out. I offer art lessons to mentors and their young friends. Theo is an active participant in every lesson, sometimes sitting in a chair at the table with the young artists. I always knew my art lesson was the number two attraction.

He is showing signs of decline so the timing was just right. He had a lovely time. A child fell asleep beside him on his dog bed, her head on his fleece ball. He wore a hat the children made, received a patriotic scarf, a new toy and cards written by children and adults. Two of the mentors adapted and performed the traditional Jamaican Banana Boat Song while Theo lounged on the office sofa. Instead of Day-O, they sang Theo (pronounced Tayo) with new words about his Circle of Friends ‘work.’

Grateful Dog TheoBeth Hanson, from the Circle of Friends, organized the party and made Theo frozen yogurt and peanut butter dog treats which he devoured in a circle on the lawn while children ate ice cream. Then he licked their plastic cups.

Really it was the sweetest and most appreciative tribute I’ve ever known for a dog. Actually the only one I’ve known. He was so relaxed,so happy to bask in the admiration!

The Circle of Friends is a remarkable organization. It is a privilege to be a small part of their important work. They make a profound difference in the lives of children.
